Women to Adorn U.S. Paper Currency?

United States President, Barack Obama, reads 10 out of 40,000 letters that are sent to him daily at the Whitehouse. More than a year ago, President Obama randomly selected a letter written by a then 8-year-old girl, Sofia, from Massachusetts. In the letter, she urged the President to put faces of influential women on U.S. currency. The President made a public response, “that’s a pretty good idea.”

Meanwhile, a New York City based nonprofit organization called Women On 20s had been working to convince President Obama to feature women on American currency. By March 2015, Sofia approached the nonprofit group and was assigned the role as Junior Ambassador to inspire young people. Since then, it appears as though there is serious consideration by Treasurer Secretary Jacob Lew to grace the new $10 and $20 bills with faces of historical women of influence in America.

Much like anything else political, there is some controversy surrounding the timeframe in which these bills will be designed and circulated. There is a current push for having new paper currency by 2020 instead of (tentatively scheduled) 2030. Secretary Lew will announce the new design for the $10 bill this week. You can keep yourself updated on the “W20” movement and even vote on the women whom you would like to see on paper currency by visiting Women On 20s website, here.

Colorful question markWhat are your thoughts? When should the new currency circulate? Is it time to place women faces on our paper currency? If so, who is your choice?
