Walmart’s Accounting Team Gets a Facelift

Last month, retail giant Walmart announced its plans to eliminate thousands of accounting, back-office, and administrative activities in an effort to boost in-store productivity and efficiency.

While many of the affected employees will be reassigned to other departments within the organization, the intent behind the decision, according to Walmart, was to increase the personal interactions between Walmart guests and employees.

This may be true. But in today’s environment of ceaseless cost-cutting, the case for process automation is stronger than ever.

Kory Lundberg, a spokesman for Walmart, said the accounting offices will soon use “cash recycler machines to improve the efficiency and accuracy of counting money, while a centralized team will handle invoicing.” By replacing the manual counting of cash with an automated system, the company hopes to give the invoicing process a much needed facelift and effectively save a sizable sum. Not to mention free up nearly 2,000 workers to focus on more value-added activities. This type of investment is designed to provide associates the tools they need to grow with the company and offer great customer service.
