‘Tis the Season for New Year’s Resolutions

As we reach the end of 2016, it is time to both reflect on the past twelve months and look ahead to the new year. While it is common for people to make New Year’s resolutions, they are too often forgotten or ignored. Some of the most consistently popular New Year’s resolutions from past years include staying fit, losing weight, enjoying life to the fullest, and spending more time with friends and family.
These are all goals that can certainly be fulfilled, but usually the determination and desire to “turn over a new leaf” fades by the time February or March rolls around. However, here are some ways to help you stick to your resolutions:

  1. Make sure your goal is specific, so that you can clearly identify the actions you need to take to reach it. With broader resolutions such as “enjoy life to the fullest,” come up with concrete examples of what would make your life more fulfilling. In this step, the bottom line is knowing what it is you must do first, rather than having the resolution remain a vague notion in the back of your mind.
  2. Schedule the resolution into your life. This could mean marking it into your calendar, like a weekly workout, or making plans with friends and family members if your resolution was to spend more time with them. However, avoid overwhelming yourself if your schedule is already packed. This will only make the resolution seem like additional cause of stress in your life, when its true purpose is to improve it. Aim to work towards your goal in some way at least once a month.
  3. Hold yourself accountable to the resolution. Oftentimes we neglect our New Year’s resolutions because circumstances change, which accordingly shifts our priorities. Every couple of weeks or so, try to zoom out and look at the big picture of your life again. Recall why the resolution was important to you when you first thought of it. If you still consider it an important goal, ask yourself at the end of each month whether you have made steps towards fulfilling it. You can track your progress in a journal.
  4. In the case that you have been neglecting to stick to your resolution, remember that it’s never too late to start back up again. Go through the last three steps to incorporate the goal back into your life. It doesn’t have to be New Year’s Day for you to make goals and act on them.

The next time you feel guilty about having turned your back on your New Year’s resolution, reread this list to get back on track.
