Why You Should Take A Lunch With Your Accounting Team

It’ after month-end close. It’s summer. It’s an easy way to say thank you to your hard working team.

Aside from the bodily health benefits (your productivity will maintain or increase with a healthy lunch), there are also social or mind health benefits. Connecting, bonding, planning and learning all result from conversations that take place during the meal.

Flavio Martins, VP of Operations and Customer Service at DigiCert, reminds us that the importance of lunch and who you dine with goes back to Junior High where it was always preferred to be eating with someone rather than eating alone.

Martins goes on to say that “This stress reducer is also a great way to develop the sense of culture within the organization. Taking time to sit down with other people at the organization and talk about anything will go a long way to developing the type of open communication and familiarity that will make the people at the organization more effective in working together on their assigned projects.”

Given the teamwork your entire staff puts in to getting the shipped products invoiced prior to midnight on the last day of the month, reconciling accounts, (more than likely working on Friday which this month happened to be a national holiday) and compiling everything for the close, occasionally lunching together furthers this esprit de corps by keeping team members happy, communicative and engaged with their colleagues and the company.

Your lunch, if it cannot be off premise, could take place in a conference room where everyone is expected to stay and eat together. Remember, the goal is not just to say thanks for a job well done with a good meal, it is to foster communication, loyalty and enthusiasm amongst your group
