Love What You Do

I’d write about cats and motorcycles.

Years ago a woman I worked with suggested during a staff meeting that the firm, a graphic design firm, start a blog. The sole supporter of the idea said that it would be easy, between twelve people we’d only have to write about four blogs a year per person. She thought it would be a great way to engage clients, put forth our approach to design, differentiate ourselves from our competitors, showcase our wit and intelligence, blah, blah, blah.

By the look on everyone’s faces it was clear that no one but her wanted to do it, which would have been fine if she wrote well but she didn’t. The other designers could not write to save their lives nor did they want to, thank God. The owner said that he’d rather eat glass than write about design. He was far more interested in renovating his estate in the south of France. At the time I was really into animal advocacy, especially the plight of feral cats, and motorcycle racing so I wasn’t any help. The idea died in that meeting and the firm went out of business a year later.

Thinking back, that was the day the firm should have closed its doors. Not because we decided to be blogless, but because we worked for a company and in an industry which no one cared about. For a long and varied list of reasons, we had all lost our passion. No one wanted to think about graphic design. No one wanted to research the latest trends in graphic design. And we certainly did not want to spend our time trying to write blog post about it.

No matter how you choose to make a living, to be successful, which can be defined in many ways, you must be passionate about it. So, let’s learn from my former company’s mistakes and choose to be passionate about the work we do in 2015.
