10 Fun Facts about Pi on Pi Day

Happy Pi Day to all those with jobs that center around numbers. Since 1988, 3/14 is the day to celebrate pi (π). Mathematicians and non-mathematicians alike have been puzzled by pi for thousands of years. Today, we are reminded how interesting numbers can be. In the meantime, here are some fun facts about pi:

  1. Albert Einstein’s birthday is 3/14.
  2. The Indiana Pi Bill of 1897 proposed to establish 3.2 as the true mathematical value for pi.
  3. Pi was likely discovered independently several times as early as 2000 B.C.
  4. Several eateries offer specials on pies on Pi Day.
  5. The symbol- π – is an abbreviation for perimeter in Greek and was first used in 1706.
  6. Today’s date, 3/14/16, is the numerical sequence of pi rounded to 4 decimal places (3.1416).
  7. In 2010, a Yahoo! employee took 23 days to compute 256 bits of π by using the company’s Hadoop application on over 1000 computers.
  8. In 2014, Paul Ingrisano created quite a stir by quietly trademarking the symbol π. -adding a period to the end. Read more about the frenzy that surrounds mathematical symbols and copyright law here.
  9. Pi is used daily to solve geometry, probability, and navigation problems.
  10. Pi Day was founded by Larry Shaw at Exploratorium 28 years ago.
